Something Quite Big From Google

Google conducted the Google Analyst Day 2006 on March 2nd. Google had presented the various strategies its going to use in a neat powerpoint presentation. According to Greg’s Blog it seems that Google had presented about new services such as Gdrive, Lighthouse etc. Don’t confuse Gdrive with the Gmail drive shell extension that is used to access Gmail like a windows drive. This is something more, which aims at 100% Storage of User data.

Google had previously released the powerpoint presentation here, but later they removed it and released a PDF version of the presentation and it does not contain Gdrive, Lighthouse information that Google mentioned in the powerpoint. Seems like they din’t want people to know about it so soon.

In a world with infinite storage, bandwidth, and CPU power, here’s what we could do with consumer products —
Theme 1: Speed
Seems simple, but should not be overlooked because impact is huge. Users don’t realize how slow things are until they get something faster.
Users assume it takes time for a webpage to load, but the experience should really be instantaneous.
Gmail started to do this for webmail, but that’s just a small first step. Infinite bandwidth will make this a reality for all applications.
Theme 2: Store 100% of User Data
With infinite storage, we can house all user files, including: emails, web history, pictures, bookmarks, etc and make it accessible from anywhere (any device, any platform, etc).
We already have efforts in this direction in terms of GDrive, GDS, Lighthouse, but all of them face bandwidth and storage constraints today

So where is Google upto ? According to theme 2, its quite obvious that Google wants all the user data on its server so that data present in the server becomes the original copy of the data and people access their own data from their comp. and it would be stored only as cache in their system. Moreover Google suggests that the data would be more secure if present in their servers than in their comp. and that the data can be accessed via various services available.

As of now there isn’t much details on Google’s much hyped projects “Gdrive” and “Lighthouse”. We know what Gdrive is going to be, but Lighthouse does not even give a clue on what it is. It might even be a codename like Caribou was for Gmail.

I can last say that Google is focussing a lot on achieving Infinite Storage…
